Skilled Trades Over College? A Conversation with High School Students
In today’s fast-paced world, many high school students are grappling with a big decision: should they follow the traditional path to college, or should they explore the hands-on, rewarding world of skilled trades? Recently, we had the privilege of visiting a Workforce Program in Springdale, Arkansas, where we had the opportunity to talk to students about why they’re choosing the skilled trades over a college degree—and what that means for their future.
During our visit, we sat down with several students involved in programs like heavy equipment operation, welding, diesel mechanics, and CDL school. These students are being trained in real-world skills that are in high demand, and they’re already thinking about their future careers in the blue-collar world. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:
1. The Trade Path is Faster
One student, Kennedy, shared that he values the trades because they allow him to get into the workforce quickly without the burden of a college degree. “College takes five years to finish, and after that, you're in debt,” he said. “In the trades, you can start making money faster, and you’re not weighed down by debt.” Many students find that trade programs, like CDL and heavy equipment operation, offer quicker routes to a stable and lucrative career.
2. The Skilled Trades Offer Hands-On Learning
Another student, Kevin, emphasized that he enjoys the hands-on aspect of the trades. “In the trades, you’re out there working, not sitting in a classroom,” he said. “You’re learning by doing, and it’s not all about sitting around reading books and taking tests.” For students who learn better by doing, skilled trades offer a practical and rewarding path forward.
3. Job Security and Earning Potential
Students in the program know that the trades offer a sense of security that college simply cannot guarantee. “I’ve always been around construction,” said Cooper, whose family has a background in the trade. “It’s what I know, and it’s something that’s always going to be around.” Skilled trades like electrical work, welding, and heavy equipment operation offer the potential for high-paying jobs and a long-term career. In just a few years, a journeyman in the trades can make well above average wages, without the debt and uncertainty that often comes with a college degree.
4. Breaking Barriers: Opportunities for Everyone
One of the most inspiring students we met was Gazelle, who’s passionate about proving that women can succeed in trades like operating heavy equipment. “A lot of people doubt women in this field, but I’m here to prove them wrong,” she said. Gazelle’s determination to break into a male-dominated field is a reminder that the trades are for everyone. With hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude, anyone can thrive in the blue-collar workforce.
5. Building a Legacy
For many of these students, it’s not just about earning a paycheck—it’s about building something lasting. “I want to leave a legacy,” said Cooper. “I don’t care about money, I care about what I leave behind for future generations.” Whether it’s owning their own business, leading a crew, or passing down a trade to others, the students we spoke with have big dreams and a desire to make an impact in their communities.
The Blue Collar Future
The skilled trades are more than just a career—they’re a path to personal growth, financial stability, and making a real difference in the world. As we continue to face a shortage of skilled workers, these programs offer an invaluable opportunity for the next generation to learn, grow, and succeed.
If you’re considering a career in the trades, or if you know someone who is, now is the time to get involved. The trades need passionate, hardworking individuals who are ready to make an impact.
